It's Wednesday so you know what it means! Exactly, a new blog post! And today we're talking to Sloane, a girl behind the Kale & Kravings blog. Her Instagram is filled with amazing photos and in her blog, she's writing about a healthy mindset and how to keep yourself together when hard times hit.

Tell us a little bit about yourself 

My name is Sloane Elizabeth and I am 21 years old. I am originally from Los Angeles, and I am currently a senior at Vanderbilt University studying Medicine, Health & Society with minors in French and Corporate Strategy. I currently work for myself as a health and wellness blogger, YouTuber, and online holistic wellness coach. I also recently wrote an ebook called Kollege Kravings: Balancing Assignments, Avocados & Alcohol. When I’m not in the kitchen, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family and getting out in nature! I love being physically active, especially on hikes or at the beach, which is why I love the west coast so much. I have also been dancing since I was 3, which has definitely played a role in my love for barre, Pilates, and yoga.

When and why did you start blogging?

Kale & Kravings was born in the summer of 2016 after my first year of college. I came home from school feeling sick and unlike myself. I knew that a poor diet contributed to these feelings, and I had always been interested in nutrition. I started cooking healthier foods and doing a lot of research on health and wellness. I made my Instagram account as a platform to share my recipes and knowledge, which has now developed into a career 2 years later! Now I have a full website and blog where I dive deeper into topics that I want to share with my audience.

What do you write about in your blog?

My blog focuses primarily on finding ways to live life as the happiest and healthiest version of YOU! It is less about food and nutrition (unlike my Instagram) and more so focused on mindset. Some previous blog posts have been about healthy habits during the holidays, stress management, and career choices. 

What does food mean to you?

Food is fuel, nourishment, medicine, comfort, memories, art, and pleasure.

What’s your favorite meal? Could you share the recipe?

One of my favorite meals is my class KK Greenie! It is a protein smoothie that I eat for breakfast almost every morning. It’s delicious, packed with nutrients and superfoods, and keeps me full to fuel me through a day of work or classes. The recipe is on my website and below!

1 cup of fruit (banana, berries)

2 stalks of celery

1 small handful of mint

½ an avocado OR 2 tbsp nut butter

1 scoop vanilla protein powder

1 scoop marine collagen peptides

LOTS of spinach and/or kale

¼ tsp cinnamon

1 tsp maca

1 tsp spirulina

1 tsp goji berries

½ tsp matcha green tea

1 tbsp chia seeds

water or almond milk to blend (about ½ cup)

What are the 3 products that should be in everyone’s kitchen?

Blender, silicone baking sheets, really good spices.

It’s the season of eating and being together with your loved ones. What would be that one meal leaving everyone speechless?

My family members don’t always love my healthy recipes , However, one dish that everyone always wants seconds of is my sweet and spicy sweet potato fries! They are absolutely addicting and the perfect side dish for any meal.

Do you have any grocery shopping tips? How to save money and still eat healthy and tasty?

I LOVE grocery shopping! It’s one of my favorite activities…some great ways to save money while shopping for healthy and yummy food are:

  • buy frozen fruits and vegetables
  • buy produce that is in season
  • buy grains/spices in bulk

We are what we eat. Yay or nay?
