Tell us a little bit about yourself
Hi! My name is Julia and I am 19 years old. I love Jesus, my family, my friends! I am a freshman in college and I am studying Communications and Spanish. I am a runner and a former dancer, and I run a food Instagram and blog called Julia’s Plate (@juliasplate). My love for cooking and baking comes from my family; we love to share meals together and my mom and I love to bake together.
When and why did you start blogging?
I started my Instagram page about two years ago because I had been following a lot of other food Instagrams for a while, and I had started making meals and taking photos. So, I decided on a whim to start my own page as a way to share pictures of my meals and connect with other people. I started my blog pretty recently, primarily as a place to store the interviews and posts that I was sharing as part of an eating disorder awareness/ body positivity campaign that I put together this year, called #NoFearFebruary.
What do you write about in your blog?
On my blog and Instagram, I share my favorite meal ideas and recipes, as well as positive thoughts and encouragements. I’ve been able to connect with so many amazing people through Instagram, and my goal is to share my experiences in order to help people.
What does food mean to you?
To me, food is the fuel that is meant to be enjoyed. I believe that God created us with taste buds because he wanted us to truly enjoy the food. Food is also meant to nourish us. So often in our culture, food is portrayed as the enemy by weight loss companies and advertisements. There are so many strategies marketed for how to eliminate foods, and what foods are bad or good to eat. So many people view food as something that we need to fight against, restrict, and label. I believe it is meant to be enjoyed, used to cultivate community, and used to fuel our bodies. Without food, we would not be able to function. I try very hard not to label foods as good or bad. In my opinion, all foods can be good in moderation.
What’s your favorite meal? Can you share the recipe?
My favorite meal is breakfast, and my favorite breakfast recipe is my Cinnamon Banana Oats! Here’s the recipe:
1⁄3-1⁄2 cup of oats
1 cup almond milk (I always use Silk Unsweetened Vanilla) 1 tsp cinnamon
1⁄3 cup blueberries
Nut butter (I love Manna Organics nut butter the most!) Granola if you’d like!
