Imagine this: You've got dinner ready, but it took you so long to prepare it that you almost forgot dessert! Of course, you could whip up one of your grandma's blueberry dessert recipes, but everyone knows how time-consuming making fresh blueberry desserts can be. We've got you covered. This recipe only makes a small quantity and can be made in a hurry.

The sweet-tart flavor of blueberry and the gooey and crumbly texture of the oats will make this the perfect dessert. With a preparation and cooking time of around 20 min, you will still have time to finish cooking that romantic dinner you have planned.

How to make Blueberry Crumble/Crisp

  • 1 cup of fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1 tsp of cornstarch
  • 1 tbs of granulated sugar (if your blueberries are already sweetened, leave this out)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 2 tbs all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbs oats
  • 3 tbs fine brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp of cinnamon, ground
  • 2 tbs unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes
  • Salt to taste (skip this ingredient if you are using salted butter)

  1. Preheat your oven to approximately 375°F.
  2. Mix the blueberries, cornstarch, granulated sugar (if needed), and vanilla extract until evenly distributed.
  3. Divide mixture between 2 ramekins.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, oats, brown sugar, butter, ground cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Once the dry ingredients are well mixed, add the butter and mix with a fork, a blender, or your own hands until you form crumbs.
  6. Spread the oat mixture over the two filled ramekins and place them in the oven to bake for 15-20 min. The crisp will turn golden-brown and the mixture will form bubbles once the blueberry crumble is ready.
  7. Serve with a scoop of your favorite ice cream. Enjoy!

How to serve a blueberry crisp?

You can top off your dish with some chopped nuts for an extra nutty flavor. Add a dollop of ice cream, or maybe some whipped cream on top for an added twist, and voila! You've got yourself a mouthwatering piece.

How to customize your blueberry crisp?

A fruit crumble or crisp can be made using any seasonal fruits that are readily available in the grocery store. Seasonal fruits like berries, peaches, apples, and apricots are always a big hit when creating delicious desserts. And hey! All of that fruit can be a little healthier than your favorite cheesecake, so you won't need to feel quite so guilty when you indulge your sweet tooth.

If you or your family are picky when it comes to texture, it is very easy to modify the filling's texture. The cornstarch is what thickens the filling. Add more or less according to the consistency that you like most. Play around with it and you might find that you like blueberry crumble even more than you thought!

This blueberry crunch can be turned into a larger crumble recipe by doubling the ratios in this recipe. Once you try this recipe you may decide that it would be perfect for your next family get together.

How to store a blueberry crisp or crumble

Once cooked, this timeless blueberry crisp can be safely stored on the counter (covered) for 2 days, in the fridge for up to 4 days, and in a freezer for up to 3-4 months!

You can easily reheat this beautiful dessert by popping it into the oven or microwave for a few minutes and enjoy the sweet syrupy confection whenever you are craving it.

This is one of those dishes that everyone loves, so keeping an extra portion or two in the freezer for those unexpected guests is a great way to stay prepared and awe your friends and family!

Tips for the perfect blueberry crumble

  • The perfect filling should emphasize the natural taste of the fruit. It's always best to use fresh ingredients if you are looking for the best flavor, but frozen or read-made ingredients can really shave time off if you are in a rush.
  • The toppings should be rich enough to complement the sweet-tart quality of the fruits you are using, but should not overpower its natural taste. Ingredients can be mixed and matched, and substitutes used as long as you adjust the amounts depending on their characteristics.
  • Whatever way you decide to prepare it, keep in mind that the perfect crisp depends on the ratio of the ingredients. Always use one part butter, two parts flour, and 1 part sugar. That always does the trick!

A good fruit crisp recipe is something you should always have tucked away in your cookbook, but this blueberry crumble is so good that you will be getting rid of all your other blueberry recipes. This is the perfect food for parties and family events. You'll almost certainly go home with an empty dish!
