Teriyaki Beef Stir Fry

Healthy, versatile, and you can make it in 20 minutes. What else could be better for a midweek dinner when you are pressed for time? Actually, you can make this recipe at least a few times a week as you can swap beef steak for ground beef, chicken, shrimp, or tofu. You can also add any vegetables you like - snow peas, baby corn, carrots, mushrooms, and bok choy are all good options. Learn to make this broccoli beef recipe and change ingredients to your taste.

What kind of beef is used for stir fry?

For this recipe, we used thinly sliced flank steak. However, you can use any other tender beef cuts, for example, sirloin or tri-tip, ribeye, top loin, tenderloin, shoulder center (Ranch Steak), shoulder top blade (Flat Iron), shoulder petite tender. Just slice it thinly as you will only fry it for a few minutes. 

How to make beef stir fry sauce

You can buy teriyaki sauce from your local shop, or make one yourself up to 3 days before making a beef stir fry — mix soy sauce, water, garlic, ginger, honey, brown sugar, and sesame oil. Simmer over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved. Turn up the heat and bring it to boil. Then slowly mix in some cornstarch until you get the desired thickness. 

How to make beef and broccoli stir fry

Ingredients

Makes 4 servings

For the stir fry

  • 1 1/4 lbs thinly sliced steak 
  • 3 cups of mixed vegetables 
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 tbs vegetable oil

For the beef teriyaki sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp ginger, minced
  • 1 tbs honey
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tbs cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Heat a teaspoon of vegetable oil in your wok over medium-high heat. Add your choice of vegetables. We used broccoli and thinly sliced bell peppers, but you can add any other veggies. Season them and cook for 3-5 mins or until vegetables have softened.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons of water and cook veggies for a few more minutes until the water has evaporated. Remove them from the pan and set them aside.
  3. Wipe the wok with a dry cloth. Heat 2 teaspoons of oil over high heat.
  4. Place steak in the pan and cook each side for 2-3 mins or until cooked.
  5. Add vegetables back to the pan and pour over your teriyaki sauce. Cook for a few more minutes over medium-high heat or until the sauce gets warm. 
  6. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and sliced green onions if desired. Enjoy.
